My dog's eye is still painful after surgery. Should I see the vet?

Hello, depending on what caused the purulent material on her eye, what you are seeing now may be consistent with scar tissue. Now, if she is having any discharge, if the normal white part of the eye (sclera) is red, or if she has bright red conjunctiva, then she should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would not recommend putting anything else into her eye until you have your veterinarian evaluate her. If she has an ulcer or an infection, putting the wrong medications in her eye may lead to a worsening condition and even the loss of her eye. I would definitely have her seen by your veterinarian if you are concerned she could be in pain or if you think her eye is not looking any better by tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I would agree that I think Buster is most likely reacting to the internal sutures. Depending on the type of material used, internal sutures may take up to 6 months to completely dissolve. I have seen many dogs who seem itchy post operatively and it will generally subside with time. I would recommend to call the doctor and ask about using a product such as Cytopoint or Apoquel which may help with the itching. Be careful rubbing the area, it may feel great to Buster but you don't want to cause trauma. Best of luck!

I agree you need to be worried. Squinting of the eye means there is pain. So either his pain is not being controlled well or there is something bothering him in the eye (like a suture from the surgery). Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. It is very important that Cutie be seen by a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment of her eyes. Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for use in treatment of eye disease without a vet’s recommendation, as some types of eye ointments and drops contain steroids that can severely damage the eye if it has a scratch/corneal ulcer. Her vet will need to evaluate her eye, and may recommend testing such as a Fluorescein stain to look for scratched/ulcers, tonometry to test the eye pressures and look for glaucoma, or a Schirmer tear test to evaluate tear production. In some cases a combination of causes can lead to an uncomfortable eye, and as you mentioned some eye conditions can be very painful. Sometimes if eyelashes/ hair are growing in a way that causes them to touch the eye it can lead to pain as well. Cutie looks to have quite large, bulging eyes, which predisposes her to conditions such as dry eye, and if you suspect she is in pain you are likely correct. It's quite common for the eye to be watery after such a surgery but it is extremely important that Noel wares an ecollar around her neck to prevent her from scratching the eye as she could do herself significant damage if she does.

It could be discomfort from the sutures. It also likely feels weird to Taurie to have her eyelid tacked down. Make sure she is wearing an Ecollar so she doesn't rub her eye and interrupt the healing.
