My dog's eye hurts after running into thorns. Should I call the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 5 lbs

There is something wrong with my dog’s eye. He was outside running around the fence barking at people not being aware of what’s close to him. He ran into alot of plants with thorns. Do I need to bring him to the vet?

Yes, you will need to take Rudy into see his veterinarian. Rudy is squinting and seems reluctant to open his right eye. He may have endured trauma or injury to his eye which may have resulted in a corneal abrasion or scratch which are quite painful and need special treatments in order to heal properly. Your veterinarian will examine the eye and will stain the eye to check for corneal injury. Rudy may need to go home with antibiotic eye medications or other medications as needed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baylee boo! I would have Baylee seen by your Vet today. I worry that she has a scratch on her cornea or inflammation secondary to being hit in the eye by the plant. When it comes to eye injuries it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. A scratch on the cornea is treated with antibiotic drops or ointment in the eye and inflammation is treated with pain medications and steroids. I hope this hope and I wish Baylee boo a speedy recovery!

This has to be treated by a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. My dog's eye is closed after grooming. Is she injured or in pain?

It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. Most pets with this condition recovery fully within 7 days time, as long as they receive treatment quickly. I hope that your pet Daisy resolves her eye issue soon! Best of luck and take care.

Dog's eye swollen, scabbed after running away. Is it an emergency?

I would recommend getting Duke to the veterinarian ASAP. If he has a penetrating foreign body to the eye, puncture, or even a deep scratch he could potentially become blind in that eye without quick intervention. I wounds are often very painful and he may require pain medication, as well as topical medication and or systemic antibiotics. But Duke really needs to be evaluated by veterinarian in person to see what type of injury he has sustained. Good luck, I hope he’s back to normal soon.
