My dog's eye is swollen, red, and rolling upward. What should I do?

I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

What is showing in her eye is her third eyelid, and given that it has worsened over the day, yes, I do recommend an emergency appointment. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. This is because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It could be that she has an eye infection or could have injured her eye causing the third eyelid to come out, but a vet can make the correct diagnosis and give her a treatment for it. Olini needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for the sudden change that you see in the eye include severe conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer or abrasion, glaucoma, uveitis, and trauma. I can't quite tell from the picture, but it may be proptosed ("popped out"). If you have an emergency vet clinic open near by, this would be a case that I would advise seeking emergency care.

When it comes to eye issues it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. From the picture I can tell Trigger's eye is very painful. Causes could be: corneal ulcer than is about to rupture or has ruptured or glaucoma. Both of these issues can be very serious for the health of the eye.
