Why is my dog's swollen red eye opaque, smelly, and discharging?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | 10 lbs

My dog has a swollen red eye. It has become worst, the eye became opaque, has a secretion (the hairs around turned red) and a very strong bad odor. I'm worried because it is something that became worst almost immediately. What it could be? What should I do?

Olini needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for the sudden change that you see in the eye include severe conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer or abrasion, glaucoma, uveitis, and trauma. I can't quite tell from the picture, but it may be proptosed ("popped out"). If you have an emergency vet clinic open near by, this would be a case that I would advise seeking emergency care.

I really think Olini needs to see a veterinarian immediately. This swollen eye looks like it cold be due to glaucoma or a proptosed eye. Both of these require emergency care as they are painful and can cause a dog to lose vision.
