My dog's eye is suddenly squinting and swollen. What should I do?

There is something wrong with my dogs eye he was find then 10 mins later there was something wrong with his eye please help me im really worry and cant afford to take him to the vet right now :(

I am sorry to see that Tank’s eye is abnormal. The squinting and elevated third eyelid and slight swelling concerns me about the possibility of a scratch to the eyeball, however that can not be diagnosed with a picture. If the eye is still squinting and painful tomorrow then he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If the eye does have a scratch it should be treated with antibiotics to prevent an infection and further chance of damage to the eye. In the meantime you can try to use a warm water compress to the area for several minutes multiple times a day. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

The most common cause would be an ulcer or scratch on the surface of the eye which causes extreme pain and discomfort and is more common in breeds with large, prominent eyes. Please arrange an eye check for her as soon as possible to assess and treat the pain and also reduce the risk of complications which could affect her vision in the future.

If Rex is squinting his eye and you're seeing swelling, Rex should be seen by a vet right away. Swelling of the eyelids & tissue *around* the eye may resolve after trauma, but if the globe (eyeball) is injured he may need treatment to protect that eye. And if the eye is fine, he'd probably appreciate if the vet prescribed a good anti-inflammatory pain medication for his comfort!

Why is my dog's eyelid swollen, but he's acting completely normal?

Hello. This could be some type of allergic reaction. Apply a warm compress to the area twice a day for 10-15 minutes at a time. You will need to keep the water quite warm, but not uncomfortable. If the swelling does not go down by tomorrow, please make an appointment to see your veterinarian on Monday. Hopefully, the swelling will resolve by then. My new dog has an infected eye. Can I clean it or needs a vet?

With the eyes squinting I worry that they are painful. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. My dog's eye is swollen, red, cloudy, and squinting. What's wrong?

It's impossible to tell you what is going on with Daisy, but the most common cause of a dog squinting and rubbing their eye is a corneal ulceration. Corneal ulcers are often relatively easy to heal, but become worse the longer it is before they are treated, so I would recommend having Daisy evaluated by your vet ASAP. My dog has red, squinting eyes and seems to be in pain. What to do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Milo. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Both of his third eyelids appear to be elevated and the squinting can indicate that his eyes are painful. He could have a scratch across the surface of his eye, inflammation within the eye itself or an infection. In other cases the eyes are not making adequate tears making them very dry and painful. Based on his exam findings, eye tests may be necessary to determine the best course of treatment. In the meantime, keep the eyes free of any discharge and do not allow him to paw at them. My dog's eye is swollen and painful after an injury. What should I do?

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. Try to get her seen soon to avoid further trauma to the eye which may be irreversible. I hope that Suzie Lu's eye injury resolves soon! Best of luck and take care. : )
