My new dog has an infected eye. Can I clean it or needs a vet?

She is likely suffering from an irritating severe eye infection, i would strongly recommend taking her to the vet ASAP in order to get her eyes checked and treated (this will require antibiotic eye drops)

I am sorry to see that Tank’s eye is abnormal. The squinting and elevated third eyelid and slight swelling concerns me about the possibility of a scratch to the eyeball, however that can not be diagnosed with a picture. If the eye is still squinting and painful tomorrow then he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If the eye does have a scratch it should be treated with antibiotics to prevent an infection and further chance of damage to the eye. If they are crusted over with some kind of dried discharge, a warm moist washcloth will help soften it and dissolve. Don't force the eyes to open and don't pick at the eyes or lashes, let the warm water do the work. To determine the cause and get it treated, you should get your dog in to see your veterinarian as soon as possible. There could be damage to the corneas that will need aggressive treatment, at the very least your dog needs ointment or drops to soothe his/her eyes and help them heal.

I recommend you use an E-collar so he doesn't rub the eye and cause a scratch on the surface of the eye. Do not put anything in the eye until you see your Vet. Ointments or drops for the eye are made specifically to be safe for use in the eye. Ointments for the skin are not safe to be put in the eye. I wish you the best and Nico a speedy recovery!

Green/yellow, thick discharge strongly suggest bacterial conjunctivitis. You can clean the eyes with warm water and cotton buds twice a day, it should give Cooper some relief. However, bacterial infection needs antibiotics treatment to resolve, so you will need to try and get your dog seen by a vet as soon as they open.

If Niko is squinting the eye or if there is excessive discharge from the eye he needs to see a vet right away. If he is not squinting, then you can use this ophthalmic gel if you'd like. If it doesn't seem better in a few days then you can get him to the vet for an exam. ( )

Poor Boomer! It sounds like he may have an eye infection. You can flush his eyes with a sterile saline solution, but he ultimately has to see a vet for treatment. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into the vet first thing Monday to have his eyes examined and treated. Best of luck!
