My dog's eye is gunked after entropion surgery. Is warm water safe?

If Teddi's surgery was just yesterday, he will still have some swelling in the eyelid from the surgery, which will make the eyelid look droopier (swelling will push the lower eyelid away from the eye). It should improve as the swelling goes down. Keep giving him the medication prescribed by your vet, and schedule a recheck for a week out from surgery to make sure he's healing appropriately. My suspicion is this will look significantly better in a week! Hope this helps!

I would say it’s not unreasonable for 4 days post-op but the swelling should be going down rapidly at this point. If it’s not improved by tomorrow, I’d pop in to see the vet who did the surgery to make sure there is not a complication such as seroma or hematoma (fluids or blood pocket). In the mean time, I recommend warm packing for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times daily. To do this, soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring it out, and put it in a plastic bag. Apply gently to the surgery site. Seepage of some clearish fluids may happen and this is just fine. Best wishes to you and Nemi!

Some discharge is going to be normal because the surgery is associated with alot of swelling of the eyelids, and swelling can cause the eyes to produce more tears. Tears mixed with the ointment is going to look a little mucous-like. If the other dog is not going to lick her eyes or try to get her to play wildly, then yes it can be around her. If she is really squinting badly tomorrow, or if you see the corneas starting to look blue or cloudy, you need to take her in for a recheck right away. If sh'es eating fine, don't worry about the water--she will drink when she's thirsty.

I am sorry to hear about Ellie but glad the itching has stopped! The skin around her eye looks a little red and I assume this is what you are speaking of. If her stitches were just removed in the past few days it is possible there was just some residual irritation from the sutures. We can also see inflammation around the eyes like this due to allergies. I would let your vet know about her eyelid and see if they feel a trial of an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine would be beneficial, or if they recommend a topical eye ointment on the lid to try to decrease irritation.

The white and yellow goo is just normal secretions from the glands surrounding the eyelid and are not overly concerning to me. I agree that the eye doesn't seem very swollen or red. Overall, this condition is mild and indicates that there is inflammation of the eye and/or conjunctiva (the pink/red tissue surrounding the eye). I usually see these cases of mild inflammation when something has scratched the surface of the eye or something like dirt or grass gets inside the eyelid. Given this, I think the saline flush and warm compress are both good things to do right now. Flush the eye with saline for one minute and try to flush inside the eyelid. Dogs (especially Malinois) usually hate this, so you're going to need some help. I recommend having one person get a good hold of Koda's body, while the other person holds the head and flushes the eye. Repeat the flush twice a day as needed. The flush time can be reduced to 20 seconds if the eye is showing signs of improvement. You can continue the warm compress three times a day. This should heal within a week. If it gets worse or does not get better after a week, then she should go to the vet, because there may be an infection.

Hello. I would not be annoyed at your veterinarian as things can happen, but it is clear that there needs to be either a treatment change, or the surgery site may need to be reexplored to make sure all infected material was removed. Previcox is a good pain reliever, but gabapentin is much better adjunct to pain management than tramadol. The antibiotic you are using is usually adequate, but your vet may also choose to augment this with something else, like a fluoroquinolone. Under normal circumstances, an eye should not look like this 1 week post surgery. You do need to contact your vet to make them aware of Pearls' condition. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
