My dog's eye looks funny and she's sleepy. Should I see a vet?

Hi! Yes, for sure there is something wrong with Lily's eyes. She looks like she is squinting, and the third eyelids are up. Sometimes dogs look like this when they are feeling unwell in general, especially if they have a fever. Or, the eyes could be the main problem. She could have scratched the surface of her eyes (this is called corneal ulcers), or possibly an eye infection. Ideally, she needs to be checked out by her vet. They can examine her, and have a close look at her eyes. There a few tests your vet can run on Lily's eyes, to help sort out what the problem is. I hope she feels better soon!

Hello, and thank you for your question. It looks like Maize's third eyelid gland is more exposed than normal, which may be due to an eye infection or inflammation. I would start by putting a warm (not hot) compress over her eye for 10 minutes, repeated 2-3 times in the day, and see if this helps to reduce the inflammation and improve her comfort. I would also put an e-collar (cone) on her head to prevent her from rubbing or scratching the eye by accident. If her eye does not improve over the next 24 hours, then you will need to take her to the vet for further evaluation. They can confirm whether there is an infection, or a scratch on the eye, and provide the appropriate eye drops to resolve the issue. I hope this helps, and that Maize feels better soon!

Awww. Poor baby. She looks like they are painful. Their eyes stick out more than a lot of other breeds so they are very susceptible to eye injuries, scratches or even dryness. You could try artificial tears or some other straight saline eye drop. No medications unless prescribed by the veterinarian. Eye problems should be addressed quickly so if she doesn’t improve with just some saline flush or tears have her looked at. They will do a thorough eye exam and stain the eyes to look for any scratches

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. Sorry to hear that Mavis hasn't been feeling too well. There is no telling whether or not the eye problem is actually related to the other issues you are reporting. Certainly it sounds like the eye is irritated, which can cause enough pain and discomfort to make a dog not want to eat or move around. The vomiting, however, indicates that there is something else happening relating to the GI tract. Even if this were just an eye issue, I would definitely suggest you take Mavis in to the veterinarian to verify there is no corneal ulcer (treatment can not safely be commenced until this has been determined). While there, they will be able to assess Mavis fully for any and all other issues. In the meantime, at home you can check her temperature (99.5-102.5), gum moisture / color, and skin elasticity. Poor Pepper. She may have injured her eye or could have an eye infection. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take her into a vet now.

Yes, if he is reluctant to or struggling to open the eye, I would be very concerned that he may have a scratch or lesion on his cornea. His eye should be examined by a veterinarian to determine if that is a possibility. If so, he would require prescription eye medication.
