My dog's eyes aren't right and she's sleeping a lot. What's wrong?

Masie definitely looks uncomfortable. You can certainly try to flush her eye out at home with water or sterile saline. If you have a syringe or a turkey baster, this would be the best instrument with which to accomplish this. If this doesn't seem to help at all and Masie is still keeping her eye half way closed, she should definitely see a veterinarian. If she did in fact have something in her eye, it is possible that it could have scratched the surface of the eye resulting in a corneal ulcer. Sometimes, when the eyeball becomes irritated, dogs will also begin to scratch and paw at it causing damage. Ultimately, I don't like to mess around the eyes. I suggest having her looked at unless there is a miraculous turnaround and full recovery. Hope this helps!

It's a bit hard to tell from the photos exactly what's going on, but it looks like her third eyelid is elevated in the right eye - that's the pale-colored membrane that you can see in the inner corner of her eye. It also looks like the area surrounding the eye may be a bit swollen. These symptoms could be caused by a number of different things, so she would really need an in-person exam and possibly some testing to diagnose the problem. Conjunctivitis or an injury to the eye such as a corneal ulcer can cause swelling and third eyelid elevation. She could also have an abscess or tumor behind the eye, causing it to bulge outward and have this appearance. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to.

It is hard to say with these symptoms what the actual problem is because so many things can cause this. However it sounds like your pet has a possible systemic illness (affecting his entire body) and this warrants a vet visit for sure. The eye may or may not be related but if there is discharge from the eye and also redness of the white part of the eye, then this means he likely has a corneal scratch or ulcer and in need of prescription eye antibiotic ointment to treat this. Squinting the eye abnormally could be caused by pain which could be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies, bacterial or viral infection, corneal abrasion or ulcer, or something stuck under the eyelids. The discharge you described could occur with any of these conditions. I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet since eyes can go downhill very quickly. The vet will do a thorough exam and may need to do one or two tests to determine what is going on so they can select an appropriate treatment.

Hi ! I suspect that Cuddles has conjunctivitis. It normally is a bilateral ocular condition (affecting both eyes) and it does cause a lot of discomfort. He might need to have some antibiotics eye drops or other ophthalmic medications and also some pain relief. I would therefore recommend to have him checked over. Hope Cuddles gets better soon !

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexi. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian as she may have a corneal ulcer. This is a scratch to the surface of the eye. It is very painful and causes the dog to squint, tear and possibly paw at the eye. Her veterinarian will place a drop of dye on the eye to test for an ulcer. If this is not the case, pugs are prone to condition known as pug keratitis. This is dark pigment that grows across the surface of the eye. I hope this information helps!
