My dog's eye is bothering her, and she won't open it. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 4 months old | 37 lbs

All the sudden tonight my dog is having issues with her eye. I have no idea what happened. I rinsed it out and tried putting a cold wet compress on it. She is also very sleepy and does not want to eat or open her eyes. She is moving fine not leaning in anyway

Poor Pepper. She may have injured her eye or could have an eye infection. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take her into a vet now.

Unfortunately, Pepper needs a veterinarian. They would most likely need to prescribe eye medication for her. She may also have an upper respiratory infection on top of an eye infection and a veterinarian would be able to determine this. The medication is a prescription and you would need to have a veterinarian physically examine the animal to get something for her. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
