My dog's eye looks off. I can't afford a vet. What can I do?

Masie definitely looks uncomfortable. You can certainly try to flush her eye out at home with water or sterile saline. If you have a syringe or a turkey baster, this would be the best instrument with which to accomplish this. If this doesn't seem to help at all and Masie is still keeping her eye half way closed, she should definitely see a veterinarian. If she did in fact have something in her eye, it is possible that it could have scratched the surface of the eye resulting in a corneal ulcer. Sometimes, when the eyeball becomes irritated, dogs will also begin to scratch and paw at it causing damage. Ultimately, I don't like to mess around the eyes. I suggest having her looked at unless there is a miraculous turnaround and full recovery. Hope this helps!

Considering the pictures you uploaded this seems a mild conjunctivitis that could potentially resolve spontaneously. I would recommend just wipe the discharge gently with a wet cotton swab and apply some simple sterile saline solution (you can buy ocular ones over the counter). If the signs do not resolve in 3 days a check up would be required though as antibiotic eye drops may be needed.

It's a bit blurry, but it looks like the third eyelid (aka nicitating membrane) is covering the eye. This usually happens when the eye is damaged (scratched or punctured), in pain from an infection, or something is stuck inside the eyelid. It's best if you can flush under the eyelid with normal saline. You can make saline at home with salt and water if you don't have any, or you can't buy any. Otherwise, keep flushing the eye three times a day with saline. It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. I agree that Macie's eye looks very red! This can be a sign of an eye infection as well as trauma to the eye or allergies. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take her into a vet today or first thing in the morning so her eye can be examined, diagnosed, and treated. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Ouch! This looks pretty irritated now. Ada could be having an allergic reaction to something, have chronic allergies that are starting for the season, or even have an issue with her immune system. I would recommend putting and e-collar (cone) on her tonight so that she can't rub her face and damage her eye and schedule an appointment for tomorrow with her regular vet. If she can't get comfortable this evening, or you don't have an e-collar, err on the side of caution and take her to an emergency clinic. Poor Ella! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. It's a bit hard to tell from the photos exactly what's going on, but it looks like her third eyelid is elevated in the right eye - that's the pale-colored membrane that you can see in the inner corner of her eye. It also looks like the area surrounding the eye may be a bit swollen. These symptoms could be caused by a number of different things, so she would really need an in-person exam and possibly some testing to diagnose the problem. Conjunctivitis or an injury to the eye such as a corneal ulcer can cause swelling and third eyelid elevation. She could also have an abscess or tumor behind the eye, causing it to bulge outward and have this appearance. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to.
