My dog's eyes have jelly strands. Is it eye worms or just debris?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can't really see in your pictures clearly-I know it is very hard to get our pets to sit still sometimes. What you are describing sounds like Thelazia. As many as 100 worms can actually be present in the tear ducts, etc. it has been reported in humans as well so please be careful and wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. The condition is caused by hatches fly larva. You'll have to take her in to your vet for treatment-likely they will prescribe an antiparasiticide like ivermectin or moxidextin, and she may require antibacterial drops for the eyes as well. This definitely can be Thelazia. This worm invades the conjunctiva and can be found near the eye like this. It's difficult to tell depth from the picture, but it's also possible that this is a worm inside the eye, which can be due to heartworm, or other round worms. In both cases you'll need to go to the vet for removal. It's not an emergency, but good to get an appointment within the next day or two. If it is in-fact Thelazia, then removal is not complicated when done by an experienced veterinarian. If the worm is inside the eye, then removal is much more complicated and you would have to be referred to a veterinary ophthalmologist for this. I hope that helps and your kitty gets better soon.

Unfortunately, I can't tell from the photo. It looks like Neige has a lot of discharge in the eye and this is concerning for an infection. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian to check out a possible eye infection and to look for any worms. I hope this helps.

This looks like a big vein, could be due to an eye infection. it could also be an eye worm but this is very rare and unlikely. you need to take KY to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, he will probably need antibiotic eye drops.

I would take some sterile saline and flush Riley's eye out. Move the eyelids around and see if you can dislodge and wipe out whatever that is. If worms are present, they will be found WITHIN the eye, not on the outside. So you will not be able to dislodge them. If you cannot dislodge the object, then take him into the veterinarians. You can;t use too much saline and use something soft like a cotton ball to gently wipe the corners of the eye. Hopefully its just hair surrounded by mucus. Monitor the eye for any redness or squinting. I hope this helps Riley!

Please try to rinse the eye with warm water (using a syringe makes it much easier) and the lines should disappear. Hair on the eye are surprisingly well tolerated by dogs. They do not cause any discomfort or irritation.

This looks like it could be a roundworm, they look like strands of spaghetti. This is contagious to other animals in the house, and if he has worms, it's safe to assume the others animals do as well. It also means the Safeguard is working to kill the worms in his system. I would make sure they are all up to date on their deworming treatments. I would give another deworming treatment two weeks after completing the first to ensure all the worms are killed. I hope this helps!
