Why does my dog have eye discharge? Is it worms or an infection?

A little mucousy discharge is not alarming. It is also not a sign of worms. If the mucus starts looking like pus or if she starts squinting her eyes or if the conjunctives turn red, then you should take her to your veterinarian for an eye exam. However if she gets a little mucousy eye discharge once in a while without those signs, it is nothing to worry about.

That looks like it could be a string of the normal eye discharge, an actual cloth string or (less common in the United States) a worm. Use some sterile ophthalmic saline and put in 3-4 drops in her eye. Gently rub on the upper eye lid to try to dislodge the discharge. Try to wipe it out with a clean, dry cotton ball. If you cannot dislodge this object, have Lucy examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It sounds as Bert is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian. I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Jack is probably suffering from an eye infection, he probably caught it from another dog outside, you will need to take him to the vet to get the eyes checked, the vet will then prescribe an antibiotic eye drops, this should resolve the problem within a few days.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can't really see in your pictures clearly-I know it is very hard to get our pets to sit still sometimes. What you are describing sounds like Thelazia. As many as 100 worms can actually be present in the tear ducts, etc. it has been reported in humans as well so please be careful and wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. The condition is caused by hatches fly larva. You'll have to take her in to your vet for treatment-likely they will prescribe an antiparasiticide like ivermectin or moxidextin, and she may require antibacterial drops for the eyes as well.
