What worm is hanging from my dog's bum? Is it contagious to pets?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

It's difficult to tell from the photo but I think these are tapeworm segments. Usually dogs are not routinely dewormed for tapeworms so I would get medication from you veterinarian to treat these. Your other dog can't get these from the puppy because they need to go through an intermediate host, usually a flea or rodent. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. He is only 6 months so intestinal parasites are common. I hope this helps and I wish Brady the best!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you physically saw a long white worm come out with Suzie's poop, it is likely a roundworm. If you saw the poop a few hours later and it looked more like a small earthworm, it is more likely a fly larvae. If it's the first, check out a dewormer such as Sentry HC WormX Plus Flavored De-Wormer Chewables for Dogs, (Pet Co). Be sure to check that the product is labeled for Suzie's weight and age. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That looks like a roundworm. These are very common parasites in puppies and he will likely get medication for it at tomorrow’s visit. These worms are contagious to other animals (cats) and humans if anyone ingestes the feces. As long as your cats aren’t walking through Kodas poop they will be fine and be sure to wash your hands after you clean up after Koda and you will be fine. Kisses to Koda!

However, an abscess near the rectum would most likely be an anal sac abscess which are fairly common. Usually they are treated with local therapy including drainage and flushing as well as systemic antibiotics. Usually these are not caused by worms so if you truly saw worms it would be unrelated like if Lola also had intestinal worms. I recommend that you go to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If you still have those worm-like substances you saw, I recommend you show them to your veterinarian. Good luck!
