Why is my dog's eye red, big, and not glowing after an injury?

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, uveitis, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Moxie! It's hard to tell 100% in the picture exactly what is going on. I wonder if Moxie is part Cocker Spaniel. Anytime I hear about a red eye I worry. The cloudiness could be edema in the cornea from increased pressure, inflammation or a corneal ulcer. Cocker Spaniels are at risk for glaucoma which is increased pressure with in the eye. Any new change in the eye I consider urgent. I recommend you see a Veterinarian now if painful. The Vet would stain the eye to look for a corneal scratch then check the intra-ocular pressure with an instrument to check for increased pressure (glaucoma) or low pressure (uveitis). Good luck!

Poor guy. THe picture is a bit dark; however, I do see some redness towards the bottom part of the cornea. This looks like possible hemorrhage and should be checked by your vet as soon as possible. THis could be due to some kind of trauma to the eye or it could be a sign of uveitis (inflammation of the inner prat of the eye). If this is indeed uveitis, then the vet will have to do some tests to determine what the underlying cause is. I hope that your pet Winston has some resolve to his eye condition soon! Hello, depending on what caused the purulent material on her eye, what you are seeing now may be consistent with scar tissue. Now, if she is having any discharge, if the normal white part of the eye (sclera) is red, or if she has bright red conjunctiva, then she should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would not recommend putting anything else into her eye until you have your veterinarian evaluate her. If she has an ulcer or an infection, putting the wrong medications in her eye may lead to a worsening condition and even the loss of her eye. I would definitely have her seen by your veterinarian if you are concerned she could be in pain or if you think her eye is not looking any better by tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. It appears that Panda may have bruised the eye. It is not uncommon for the dog breeds with protruding globes to accidentally get bumped in the eye. Usually, the redness will go away in a few days, but if the area does not clear or seems to be getting worse, or you notice any discharge from the eye, enlargement to the globe, unequal pupils or anything else that concerns you, please see your veterinarian as soon as convenient. It looks like Denzel's third eyelids are sticking out. For some reason, her eyes are irritated but I can't diagnose why without seeing her in person. Any eye problem should be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take her into a vet now.

The pupil can constrict with bleeding or inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye, blunt trauma, or a scratch to the surface of the eye. If you see blood, if your dog is squinting or seems painful, or if there is discharge from the eye I’d recommend traveling to see an emergency vet if at all possible since some conditions could compromise vision if left untreated. Otherwise I think you could monitor her for a day but if the pupil does not return to normal within 24 hours I’d recommend seeing a vet.
