What's that strange growth in my dog's eye after a flash photo?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a little difficult to see due to the flash, but if the area is in the eye itself, it may be the beginning of a cataract. If you are referring to the area in the corner of the eye, closes to the nose, it is normal for the skin around the eye to have a little less hair. Cataracts are very common in dogs, especially as they get older but may be a sign of an underlying health condition such as diabetes. I recommend d having Cooper seen by a vet if you believe there is something abnormal about his eye. Hello. That looks like a small growth/tumor that originated in a tear-producing gland. Without an actual biopsy, we cannot say the exact type or if it is benign/malignant. However, the majority are Meibomian Gland Adenomas and typically are benign. They can bleed, cause inflammation or infection and, if large enough, can irritate or even scratch the cornea. They can be a nuisance. Monitor for squinting, pain, rubbing the eye or chronic discharge. Some need to be removed surgically. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach

This looks like an infected meibomian cyst. These are common and usually don't cause a problem. If it enlarges or causes excessive tearing or eye irritation then we usually remove them. Do keep an eye on the black spot as sometimes these can become cancerous. From the photo though it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should it change or enlarge please get a veterinary exam. If this is pigmentary keratitis, the underlying cause needs to be diagnosed so it can be treated correctly. Even if this was a melanoma, yes they are usually benign in dogs. In fact, 80% of them are benign. If it was melanoma, it could be destroyed with a laser since it's small. Have her see a veterinary ophthalmologist before getting too worried about it. Black spots on a dogs eye indicates either an eye freckle or eye tumor. The next step is to get your vet to do a complete eye exam, which then may lead to a second opinion through a veterinary ophthalmologist to confirm. It is really difficult to tell from this photo and the one directional view of the shadow in question; however, I would assume this isn’t pannus because there are no other symptoms of pannus (i.e. conjunctivitis, or any vasculariztion (red blood vessels leading to this spot) that I can see and the photo isn’t very convincing. However, I would suggest taking 3 more photos at different angles and not changing anything about the photo or this can lead to distortion,m. The eye in this photo looks almost cartoony and hard to decifer what other possible things this could be. We look forward to your repost and best of luck getting some good shots. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dexter is super cute! The most common mass that looks like your pictures is a sebaceous adenoma. They are benign skin growths. Some dogs can get multiple all over the body. They usually do not cause a problem unless the dog bothers them. Another possibility is a low grade mast cell tumor. If Dexter ever gets sedated or goes under anesthesia for another procedure just have them remove it. It is small and shouldn't take long. I hope this helps and have a great day!
