Black spots on a dogs eye indicates either an eye freckle or eye tumor. The next step is to get your vet to do a complete eye exam, which then may lead to a second opinion through a veterinary ophthalmologist to confirm. I do hope that this is just an eye freckle, but it is impossible to say for sure with just a photo.

Can you post a picture? If this is a new change then I would have him checked by your Vet. It could be bruising of the skin from a clotting issue or low platelets, infectious causes or trauma. Another possibilities is excessive tearing. Dog tears contain a pigment that is reddish brown and can stain the fur around the eyes.

The bump like things above her eyes are special whisker type hairs with special sensory cells....very normal. The pigmentation on the eyelid should be examined by your veterinarian as that may be a mass that could eventually cause some damage to the eye via rubbing, or it could be a cyst, an abscess or cancer.
I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian soon.

It's possible there could be an injury to the eye if it appeared suddenly, or a congenital defect if it's always been there. However, if you are concerned, the spots appeared suddenly, or it seems bothersome to Ralph, having it examined by your local vet or a veterinary ophthalmologist is best.

This looks like an infected meibomian cyst. These are common and usually don't cause a problem. If it enlarges or causes excessive tearing or eye irritation then we usually remove them. My last visit to my dog's ophthalmologist was quite a bit less than surgery would be to remove his eye, so before making any rash decisions, I would find out the cost of seeing the ophthalmologist. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to determine if a mass in the anterior chamber is an iris cyst (which is benign) or a melanoma, but one trick is that an iris cyst may move in the eye. So if Tia is on her back, does the mass move? If so, be sure to give your doctor that information. I wish I had a simple answer for you, but I hope that was helpful. My dog has a brown spot in his eye. Should I worry about cancer?

You should always have something like this checked out by your vet in person. A special ophthalmoscope is needed to check the eye. My best guess is that this is an iris (uveal) cyst. If this brown spot moves around in the eye (floating) it is probably an iris cyst. If it is stationary and does not move, then it may be a cancer. This is not something that can be diagnosed over the internet.

What's that strange growth in my dog's eye after a flash photo?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is a very interesting photo, and a great shot, however it cannot show us where exactly in the eye the mass is. It appears that it is within the globe of the eye itself, however it could also be in other locations. It is possible to get 'freckles' in the eye, however if there is a small mass, cancer is possible. I recommend you have Trace to the vet to have the eye assessed fully, and an ophthalmologist may be required. Some masses can be benign as well, and only a sample of the mass can confirm, but a simple eye exam to determine the exact location may be enough. It could also just be a normal feature of the eye that is presenting in an abnormal way (we call this 'artifact') on the image. Best of luck with Trace!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. This will likely require sedation because of the location of the growth. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

My dog has a small eyelid spot. When should I worry and see a vet?

Unfortunately, the photo is too blurry to see the lesion properly. Dogs can get eye lid tumors, stys and infected glands. If the lesion is still present in two weeks or if it starts looking worse, have Freddie examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.

My dog's eye spot is growing. Is it melanoma? What should I do?

If this is pigmentary keratitis, the underlying cause needs to be diagnosed so it can be treated correctly. Even if this was a melanoma, yes they are usually benign in dogs. In fact, 80% of them are benign. If it was melanoma, it could be destroyed with a laser since it's small. Have her see a veterinary ophthalmologist before getting too worried about it.
