Dog can't blink after TECA surgery. Is it permanent? How often eye drops?

If Teddi's surgery was just yesterday, he will still have some swelling in the eyelid from the surgery, which will make the eyelid look droopier (swelling will push the lower eyelid away from the eye). It should improve as the swelling goes down. Keep giving him the medication prescribed by your vet, and schedule a recheck for a week out from surgery to make sure he's healing appropriately. My suspicion is this will look significantly better in a week! Hope this helps!

I am unsure from your question quite how far he has recovered - is he still unable to blink, or does he blink and have protruding third eyelids? If he has a functional blink, and hie eyes are making sufficient tears to protect the eye (your vet can perform a simple procedure to check this) then continued monitoring would be a reasonable option to see how things improve over 3-6months

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lexi is such a cute girl! Ectropion is a condition that typically affects the lower eyelid. It causes the lower eye lids to droop down, exposing the conjunctiva (or the pink part inside the eye) and causing chronic exposure to the outside and thus inflammation and irritation. While there is a genetic predisposition, this only means that the condition can develop at some point. Congenital conditions are also genetically linked, but occur at birth or shortly after. Ectropion in dogs, just like in people, gets worse with age as the muscles in the face get weaker and the eye lids droop down. From Lexi's photo, I can see that she does have droopy eye lids, but I cannot see the lower ones. This condition can be corrected with surgery, similar to an eye lift in people. To keep Lexi more comfortable, you can apply artificial tears or lubricating drops to keep her eyes moist. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

That depends. A corneal lesion should be healed by 50%+ within 3 days for normal healing. The total surface area needs to be taken into account to gauge the healing. The best person to answer this question is the veterinarian who is caring for Taurie. They know how big and how deep the ulcer is. Sometimes non healing ulcers need a grid keratotomy and/or plasma drops (though this is debated). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'm so sorry to hear that Tank has developed these problems. It sounds like he may have developed something that affected a number of cranial nerves. The most likely reason for this would be a middle ear infection that has affected the vestibular apparatus as well as the nerves to the face. Unfortunately, facial nerve paralysis can be permanent, so if Tank does not regain the use of the left side of his face, he may have to continue using eye drops life-long. Hopefully the facial nerve paralysis will improve along with his head tilt and coordination. The only other suggestion I would have is that I have had some luck with facial nerve paralysis with acupuncture, so that may be an option for Tank. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Any scarring on the cornea will cause changes to the vision. Pets with this condition can also get pigmentation of the cornea which will also cause blind spots. KCS is generally a chronic and requires daily treatment with an immune suppressant eye drop like cyclosporin and an artificial tear. Pets with KCS will be more prone to infections and will have a harder time healing injuries. Any ongoing infection or untreated injuries can lead to blindness and pain. I hope this helps.
