Dog's eyes blister and he's sick after bath. Is it the soap?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 12 lbs

As my aunt (87) is bathing her dog, she is not careful to keep her fingers out of his eyes (or the soap, for that matter). After she bathes him, I've noticed that he gets a small blister-like lump on his cornea. Then he becomes lethargic, hesitant to use the stairs in our home, and sometimes behaves as if he wants to be alone. He usually follows her incessantly, until he gets bathed. She's owned the dog for 5-6 years.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sunny!

I am assuming his symptoms resolve until the next bath? My suggestion is maybe the family can get together and take Sunny to a groomer for your Aunt. That way he can bathed and clipped professionally and prevent trauma to his eyes.

If Sunny still is acting abnormal and still has blisters on his eyes he should be seen right away by a Vet.

Good luck!
