Is one Apoquel dose enough for my dog's itching with an eye ulcer?

Apoquel is dosed twice daily initially, and due to it’s pharmacokinetics I would agree that twice daily would be preferable to increasing the dose once daily. There might be some other options as well - you could ask your vet about trying Cytopoint or other medications for allergies.

This medication is very effective to decrease the itch and help with the clinical signs associated with allergies that you describe. The best thing about Apoquel besides its efficacy is that you can stop it at any point so you can consider using it just for the time being while she is affected by allergies the most. Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. Exocin is a topical antibiotic. You should aim to apply it at minimum every 6-8 hours until her recheck. If you are able to, you should apply this drops every 2 hours for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours for 5 days as recommended. Superficial ulcers take about 3-5 days to heal and you should see significant improvement in Lily's symptoms within 2-3 days. If you are not seeing improvement by day 5, then you should have a recheck with your veterinarian promptly. Best of luck and hope Lily has a speedy recovery.

She should be fine to get her second dose a bit early. Go ahead with her second dose at midnight and then resume her normal every 12 hr schedule tomorrow. : ) I hope that Lily’s new medication helps to control her allergies! Take care.

Poor Lily. Sometime both Apoquel and steroids might be necessary to control skin condition. Generally speaking, steroids have more side effects compared to Apoquel and is important to consider correct amount and length of treatments. Steroids need to be tapered gradually so please do not stop them without having gradually reduced the dose. Apoquel has a maximum effective dose so if Lily is already getting the maximum you won't see any beneficial effect if you increase it further. I would suggest to ask your vet exactly when to start and stop steroids as she knows Lily condition very well and can organize for her a treatment plan. Hi there. 1.5 mg per day is not a very high dose for a 14.5 pound dog, so I would not expect stopping the meds abruptly to cause any problems in this case :) As long as Lily is acting normal, there should be no reason for concern.

In addition to the apoquel you can give omega 3 capsules, a total of 2000 mg daily. This will reduce inflammation and improve his coat also. Bathing in mild hypoallergenic shampoo weekly will help too. In addition keep him busy with toys and exercise as the more he licks his feet and rubs his eyes the worse it gets.
