What can I put on my dog's dry, cracked, and rough nose to help?

I see a small superficial abrasion on the right side of her nostril. This can be caused by the dry nose situation that you described earlier or from a traumatic event. You can try applying either Vasoline or Bag balm on her nostrils to keep them moisturized. However, typically most dogs don’t require this unless they are older senior dogs or have a skin condition (ie Lupus). Best wishes and take care.

You could try using a small amount of Vaseline or Bag Balm on this area to help with the dryness - some dogs will try to rub off any topical medications that might be applied, unfortunately, so I can't say if he will leave these alone or not. Normally, using only a small amount is best, so that it doesn't feel sticky and strange to the dog :)

Dry noses can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, including infectious conditions, immune mediated issues, allergies, or more systemic diseases. Since this seems to be a recurring annual issue, I would be inclined to think that allergies seem most likely. Max will lick anything off of his nose, so try to apply topical treatments as he is eating to at least allow for a brief period of contact time. You can try starting an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement (such as Welactin). Topically, you can try applying vitamin E (buy OTC capsules and open them up to apply the contents to his nose) and moisturize with small amounts of lanolin. If the cracking continues or worsens, a trip to the vet is in order for further diagnostic testing. I hope that all goes well!

It would be more helpful if you could post again with more information and a photo or two. The best I can tell you is that you can try putting some Vitamin E, Neosporin or Vaseline on the nose. Chances are Nacho will just lick it off but you can try. There are some autoimmune disorders than can cause this issue so I do suggest you get him to your vet for an exam.

With that location, anything you put on his nose will be licked off almost immediately, so you are correct that you want something safe. I also try to use products that are not particularly tasty, so they lick less (so I don't like coconut oil products). My favorite product is simply Vitamin E. You can poke a hole in the capsule and apply the oil directly to the area. There are some topical Vitamin E salves that are safe as well, but you have to read the ingredients carefully. Good luck! This is common in this breed. You can apply Bag balm to the nose once a day to help with this. After a few weeks of use it should improve, however if it doesn't then an immune mediated disorder (i..e Lupus) may be the cause, and its best to get the area tested through your vet for further treatment options.

Foxy appears to have a condition known as hyperkeratosis; where the skin cells grow too much and irregularly. This condition can be caused by a previous infection with distemper virus, an autoimmune (self-attacking) disease, a metabolic disease or some other cause of irritation to the nose. One possibility is too much sun exposure. If this is a possibility, then you can apply sunscreen (SPF 50) to his nose twice a day and see if it helps. Otherwise, you need cream to help keep the skin from drying out. You can use vaseline. Just make sure to rub it in as much as you can, because he will be licking. If the treatment is not working well, then it's best if you can take Harley to get examined by the vet. They can look for other signs of a problem and help identify the cause.
