My dog has diarrhea, mucus, & orange specks. Should I see a vet?

If Parker is otherwise normal, I would recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and feed this until the symptoms resolve. If he worsens or it does not resolve, I would take him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Organge poops are concerning for possible liver disease (the yellow colour suggests the liver is not working as well), and diarrhea is concerning as well. Not wanting to eat like normal is also a sign of not feeling well. You can try him on a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice to see if it is just a gastritis that has thrown off his gut, otherwise I would suggest getting bloodwork done to see if his liver is OK. As long as he is otherwise well I would restrict jim to a bland diet such as boiled chicken and brown rice and add some pumpkin to restore normal bowel movement. Probiotics are also very helpful (natural yogurt if you can't source fortifora). Any lethargy, vomiting or reduced appetite would indicate the need for a vet check.

I would recommend a vet check up for Duke. He could have intestinal parasites such as hookworms, coccidia or giardia. None of these can be seen in the stool. The vet will likely get a stool sample to check for parasites or eggs under the microscope. Good luck and hope he's better soon.

Loose stools with a lot of mucous often indicate a Giardia infection, or colitis (irritation of the colon). You can try to feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and cooked rice for a few days and see if that helps. I recommend taking him to the vet if any of the following happen: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Dog starts acting very depressed 4) Dog stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. The spots changing color is not concerning. This happens normally as they age. As long as the coat and skin are still healthy appearing (shiny and soft as seen in the picture), then I would not be too worried. If you do see the coat getting more dry, flaky and brittle, then it's best to have your vet evaluate him for potential conditions that can cause this. I hope that helps and Prince gets better soon.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

I recommend to call your veterinarian today. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it.
