My dog has dark, pudding-like, bloody diarrhea with mucus. What to do?

I am very sorry to hear that your dogs are experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor them at home. Rest their gastrointestinal tracts by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhea. If they do not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhea, you notice fresh blood, they seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

I am so sorry that you have limited access to your vet right now. If he is otherwise acting normal and doesn't have any unexplained bruising on his body or red blotches on his gums, then this is likely stress colitis. You can try offering some probiotics, if available, to him in the meantime until the storm calms down. It is also likely that the storm itself is causing Melo to stress out. Some good readily available probiotics are Fortiflora or Proviable and mostly found at your local pet store. If they are also not open, then you can just try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or ground turkey and rice for now, then get Melo seen by your vet as soon as the weather clears up to get his colitis treated with prescription antibiotics. Hello. This all depends on how Luna is feeling & doing otherwise. If she is eating & drinking & acting normal, you can try just fasting her for the next 8-12 hours, & then feeding her a bland diet consisting of cooked white meat chicken & plain boiled whole grain rice ( not instant or minute rice ). Feed her a couple of teaspoons every few hours & see how she does. If the diarrhea should worsen, contain more blood, or Luna starts vomiting, please see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hello, sorry to hear about Benji. There are several causes for this including inflammation of his intestines, an infection with parasites or overgrowth if bacteria, or even a dietary indiscretion. You can try to offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days to rest his GI tract. If that does not work fully, you may add fiber to his diet with canned raw pumpkin for a few days. If this also does not work, or if his diarrhea with blood worsens or if he develops other signs such as vomiting, lethargy, and a decreased appetite then Benji should be evaluated by his veterinarian sooner. You can add a canine probiotic to the diet that can help restore nirnak bacteria. You can feed boiled chicken and rice and yogurt also.
