My dog has coughing, bloody nose, breathing issues, but no answers?

You might ask your veterinarian if the X-rays could be reviewed by a radiologist. While the resolution that the forum pictures allow makes them a bit difficult to interpret, I am concerned that the X-rays do not appear normal, and she may have a more serious underlying condition. It may be that she has some underlying heart disease, cancer, or an infection that requires a more broad spectrum of antibiotic. I agree the blood work you've attached is unremarkable. Was a CBC performed as well? Check back with your vet about a radiology review, and a recheck exam as well. A consult with a cardiologist may be recommended, depending on the radiologist's opinion. I'm sorry I don't have better news, or a solution to offer you to try at home, but I think you need to circle back and followup with your vet on this. Since it sounds like you've been to two different primary vets and still don't have the answers you need regarding Mason's symptoms, I recommend requesting a referral to an internal medicine specialist. This would be a vet who completed a 1 year internship followed by a 3 year specialty residency to become board certified. To be honest, it sounds like your vet has done a lot to rule out the most common causes of this noisy breathing starting with the least invasive procedures first (medications in case it was a respiratory infection). Given that there has been no improvement in his symptoms, the fact that they have gotten worse, and the fact Jones is a Lab, I would be thinking it's cancer as well. Unfortunately, cancer is common in Labs. You can see if your vet will take an x-ray of his nasal passages. That will be show if there is a tumor in his nasal passages, and it may be less expensive than the biopsy. I am sorry :-(

Poor Bailey! Coughing up blood along with bleeding from the nose are quite serious, and I would take her into the vet now. This bleeding could be a sign of ulcers, an inability to clot blood, liver failure, respiratory disease, or cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibly in an old dog, and if she did have cancer that had spread to her lungs, it could cause these signs. I would take her into a vet right away. The vet can do routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly blood clotting tests to see what is causing her to cough up blood and have nose bleeds. Once the cause is found, the vet can determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate for her.

It could be Gus Gus has a foreign body, growth, or fungal infection in his nose causing the bleeding. A fever means that he could have an infection going on. He needs to see a vet now, as he sounds quite sick with all of his symptoms. Please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Without knowing much more about the case there is very little that myself or any other Pet Coach will be able to offer. According to the listing your dog is only a year old. If you have been to five different regular veterinarians and they all are unable to either come to a consensus or figure out what is the problem, referral to a specialist is probably recommended. While I am always sensitive to financial constraints, there sometimes are only so many options available that make the most sense for all parties involved. Coughing and sneezing can be caused by such a long laundry list of possibilities. Through five vets, I have to imagine you have tried all the simplest solutions thus far. At this point, it is probably time to be talking about doing additional diagnostic testing like transtracheal washes, bronchoalveolar lavage, and/or broncho-rhinscopy.

I think you need to get a second opinion from another vet, preferably one who has a rhinoscope and can actually look into your dog's upper respiratory passages. By examining the nasal passages with a rhinoscope one will be able to see whether there is a tumor present or more plant debris or foreign material that may need to be removed and so stop the constant infections and bleeding. Your vet may be able to refer you to a relevant clinic.
