My dog is coughing blood and has a heart mass. What's wrong?

You might ask your veterinarian if the X-rays could be reviewed by a radiologist. While the resolution that the forum pictures allow makes them a bit difficult to interpret, I am concerned that the X-rays do not appear normal, and she may have a more serious underlying condition. Any heart disease associated with blood clots may result in your dog coughing up blood. A heartworm infection increases the risk for pulmonary thormboembolism which may cause blood or bloody fluid to be pushed into the airways. Has he been tested for heartworm disease? Dogs with pancreatitis, some types of anemia, lung cancer, systemic bleeding, inflammatory diseases and hyperadrenocorticism will also be at an increased risk for pulmonary disorders which could cause this. Something is definitely causing him discomfort and pain. More advanced testing may be needed. Have you considered taking him to see a veterinary internal medicine specialist? This definitely sounds concerning, but without knowing all of the results of the tests that have already been performed it's difficult to make recommendations about what to do next. Based on your description I'd be concerned about an infectious disease or cancer, but I'm assuming many diseases have already been ruled out if Gato has seen four veterinarians. If Gato has not been to see an internal medicine specialist I would recommend asking your regular veterinarian about a referral. It is concerning that he coughed out some blood mucous and while that can be a sign of respiratory infection, in a senior dog I would also be concerned that it could be a sign of cancer. It's best that he is seen by a vet tomorrow for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and chest x-rays. These tests will help the vet diagnose what is causing his symptoms. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coughing and bringing up clear liquid could be coughing up stuff instead of vomiting. This is important to try to differentiate. Coughing up liquid is more consistent with heart disease. The x-rays are difficult to read as the image transfer through is of poor quality and to really assess the lungs you need good quality images, however the heart does look a bit enlarged and the lungs do look a bit 'white'. I cannot assess the liver on these radiographs as you cannot see them. An enlarged heart, white lungs (fluid in the lungs), and an enlarged liver is consistent with both right and left sided heart disease. I recommend you return either to your vet, or another vet, and get a specialist ultrasound of the heart (an 'echo') to determine if heart medications are required. Your vet can also listen to the heart to see if a murmur is present in the heart, or 'crackles' are heard on the lungs. Heart disease is very serious and needs medications to manage. Without these Lily unfortunately will essentially drown in her own lungs, if heart disease is the problem. I suggest a recheck as soon as possible to get this figured out. I think it may be time to consider a specialist. I'm not sure if the vet has done a recent x-ray of Mumchie's chest, but I would be concerned his symptoms could be due to heart disease. That can be common in older dogs. Seeing a specialist may give you some answers. Best of luck.

Possible causes are clotting or platelet issues, liver issues, cancer, heart worm disease, fungal or bacterial pulmonary disease. I would take her back for a recheck.
