My dog's coughing for weeks with green snot. Is it kennel cough?

It looks like and sounds like from your description that your dog has a respiratory infection. I would recommend that he be seen by your veterinarian as he needs some prescription antibiotics due to the thick nasal discharge. Your pet is contagious to all other dogs and should be isolated from any contact with any other dogs.

It’s possible that he’s got rhinitis, which can be caused by an allergic type reaction, an infection, or even an auto-immune type condition where the nasal passages become inflamed for no reason. A foreign body (such as a grass seed) would also be possible, as would a nasal tumor. A rhinoscopy (scope of the nose) and biopsy may be needed for a diagnosis and to determine the best treatments. Poor Roxy! I can definitely see the dry discharge from both nostrils. You’re right in saying that this can be caused by an upper respiratory infection. In most cases these infections cannot be transmitted to people or from people to dogs. These are very common in dogs, and can easily be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, nasal discharge can be caused by several other diseases such as a nasal foreign body or mass, or even pneumonia. Your vet can do some blood work and x-rays to determine the exact cause of Roxy’s nasal discharge. You should have her seen immediately if she begins acting lethargic, loses her appetite, or you believe she’s having trouble breathing.

They may need to prescribe different medications or do testing, like radiographs. Because he is young he has a weaker immune system so he may need extra help getting better. If her cough has not gotten better but worse and she has green mucous draining from her nose, she likely still has an upper respiratory infection and should be seen and treated at your local veterinary clinic. Another (likely longer) round of perhaps a different antibiotic may be prescribed. Your vet may test for distemper and/or do chest x-rays to check for pneumonia. Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

At her age, it may be a touch of kennel cough or it could be a more serious respiratory infection. The kennel cough typically resolves with or without treatment in about 2 weeks although the cough may linger afterwards. A physical exam would be required to diagnose other infection. If it is a respiratory infection, Lola may need antibiotics which your veterinarian can dispense.
