My dog is coughing. Can I get sick or infected from his cough?

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

It sounds like a respiratory infection, it could be kennel cough or a similar type of infection. you should take him back to the vet in order to start him on an antibiotic course ASAP. you shouldn't be worried regarding catching an infection from him though, it is very rare for a human to catch a respiratory infection from a dog, they do not tend to get those infection from viruses/bacterias that affect humans.

However, continue to make sure that you or your dog do not have interactions with other dogs as they could become infected with kennel cough as well. So if your niece has dog of her own, make sure she washes her hands and changes her clothes when she leaves your home so that she decreases the chances of her own dog becoming sick.
