Can kennel cough spread via clothes to my dogs or to me if pregnant?

Kennel cough is spread through the air and by improper hygiene. Therefore, it could be spread to a dog that has no contact with other dogs if a human in the household was touching an infected dog and didn't wash up afterward, or by the dog being housed in an area where and infected dog had been recently. The chances of transmission by human contact are much less likely than being in a kennel situation, but still possible.

Hello, no kennel cough is not transmissible to humans. The agents that cause kennel cough are specific to dogs and other canines. However, continue to make sure that you or your dog do not have interactions with other dogs as they could become infected with kennel cough as well. So if your niece has dog of her own, make sure she washes her hands and changes her clothes when she leaves your home so that she decreases the chances of her own dog becoming sick. The vaccine does not cover against every kind of organisms that can cause kennel cough, so your dies have a possibility of contracting it. But your dog can only spread it if infected. Just because your was exposed does not mean he is a carrier or contagious to other dogs unless he is showing symptoms

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Kennel cough is usually self limiting with in 2 weeks and stops being contagious once the cough resolves. Make sure all bedding and clothing used to handle the mother is cleaned. It might be ideal to dedicate one room in your house for her to deliver that she currently doesn't have access to. That way it is free of kennel cough. Hopefully she will have stopped coughing by her due date. Good luck!

There are a few reports of Bordetella bacteria affecting severely immunocompromised people, but the other viruses cannot affect people. I typically recommend moderate exercise restriction until the cough improves. The virus and bacteria are not very hardy in the environment, and direct contact is necessary for spread. Routine cleaning should be fine.

Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge.
