Is dog kennel cough contagious to humans, like my baby niece?

Kennel cough is spread through the air and by improper hygiene. Therefore, it could be spread to a dog that has no contact with other dogs if a human in the household was touching an infected dog and didn't wash up afterward, or by the dog being housed in an area where and infected dog had been recently. The chances of transmission by human contact are much less likely than being in a kennel situation, but still possible.

There are a few reports of Bordetella bacteria affecting severely immunocompromised people, but the other viruses cannot affect people. I typically recommend moderate exercise restriction until the cough improves. The virus and bacteria are not very hardy in the environment, and direct contact is necessary for spread. Routine cleaning should be fine.

You will not be able to get kennel cough from your dog. Depending on what pathogen has caused the cough it may or may not be able to be spread on your clothing to other dogs. If you simply practice good hygiene, washing hands, etc., your dog's at home should be safe.

Theoretically yes as kennel cough is just a generic name to define a complex infection due to a mix between bacteria and different viruses. Practically is less commonly seen in cats and it is unlikely to be transmitted from dogs to cats (unless they really share the same house). Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge. The vaccine does not cover against every kind of organisms that can cause kennel cough, so your dies have a possibility of contracting it. But your dog can only spread it if infected. Just because your was exposed does not mean he is a carrier or contagious to other dogs unless he is showing symptoms
