Is dog conjunctivitis contagious to humans? How to prevent spread?

Conjunctivitis can't spread to the body, it's likely to be an allergic reaction that does not react to anti histamines. the next step is to try either steroids or Apoquel, the two are much more specific for this type of allergy, if it works- apoquel can be taken on a regular basis.

Pinkeye, or infectious conjunctivitis, is contagious and is usually spread through direct contact with another dog. It looks identical to other types of conjunctivitis including allergic conjunctivitis, and there is not a good test to differentiate between them. It is possible that Hercules has allergic conjunctivitis if he is having recurrent signs. It is also within the realm of possibility that Herc's friend is an asymptomatic carrier, although this is not common and I cannot find reference to any specific cases. Regardless, it sounds like Herc should see the vet for a work up and to discuss ongoing treatment!

Without seeing the dog myself, I have no idea what was wrong with him. I would need to at least see a photo to be of any help. My best guess is that he had papilloma virus warts on his face and those are not contagious.

I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You definitely don't want to put any solution in the eye that isn't designed for eyes. Peroxide should not be instilled in any eye. Mild conjunctivitis of the eyes is usually self-limiting and will go away on its own. You can clean eye discharge with warm water and a soft cloth. If your dog is squinting, seems painful, scratching at his eyes, or if the corneal surface of the eye seems blue or cloudy, he may have a scratched cornea or other more serious eye condition and needs to be seen by a vet right away. If the eye seems to have yellow or green discharge for more than 48 hours, you may need a vet visit to get some antibiotic eye ointment to start him on.

Considering the pictures you uploaded this seems a mild conjunctivitis that could potentially resolve spontaneously. I would recommend just wipe the discharge gently with a wet cotton swab and apply some simple sterile saline solution (you can buy ocular ones over the counter). If the signs do not resolve in 3 days a check up would be required though as antibiotic eye drops may be needed.
