My dog gets pink eye after playing. Is it allergies or contagious?

Infectious conjunctivitis is not common in dogs and unless she is going to doggie day care or is in contact with many dogs it is unlikely that she has contracted an infection twice. More likely would be allergic conjunctivitis or another eye disease like anterior uveitis. I would recommend rechecking with your veterinarian first. If they see anything unusual they may recommend referral to an ophthalmologist.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Wiski! Yes! A viral or bacterial conjunctivitis or allergies is the most common cause for his signs. There are contagious doggie "pink eye" that they get from doggie daycare or playing with other dogs. It is best for your Vet to examine Wiskie and prescribe eye safe drops or ointment. If the pinkness is on the outside of the eye (the skin around eye) and is puffy this could be the start of an allergic reaction to something in the environment, an insect bite or sting, or even a vaccine if any given in the last 24 hours. If this is the case you may notice the swelling progressing and in that case Bella Bear should see a veterinarian right away for injectable medication to help. If the redness is on the outside of the eye itself (the sclera or whites of the eye) this could be due to something irritating that had gotten into the eye or as part of an allergy to something in the environment. If this is the case I would prevent her from rubbing her eyes and you can flush with sterile saline or a lubricating over the counter drop such as genteal. If the pinkness persists or worsens I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian to see if there is a prescription ointment that may help. I don't think this has anything to do with the baby possum.

Dogs can certainly get infection of their conjunctiva which is pinkeye. However this could indicate an upper respiratory tract infection or something wrong with the eye it's self which is more concerning. It would be best to have Rocko examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible to make sure that eye is OK. If it is a short course of a topical ointment maybe all that is needed. However if the eye is involved or there's an infection he will likely need antibiotics. You should stop him from pawing or rubbing at the eye as well as keeping the discharge cleared with a warm washcloth until he can see a veterinarian.

Poor Alfie! You are right to try and keep him from scratching, as this can lead to painful scratches on the cornea. Use an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent him from scratching his eye. Please have Alfie seen by a vet if the conjunctivitis is recurring, and do not apply anything to the eye yourself, as adding anything else (even salt water, unless it is an ophthalmic saline solution appropriate for dogs) can irritate the eye further and lead to damage to the tissue. I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Conjunctivitis can't spread to the body, it's likely to be an allergic reaction that does not react to anti histamines. the next step is to try either steroids or Apoquel, the two are much more specific for this type of allergy, if it works- apoquel can be taken on a regular basis.
