My Chihuahua collapses, kicks, and stays conscious. Is it a seizure?

Yes it could have been from a seizure or a bad dream. As long as Lola is normal now I would monitor her to see if this happens again. Dogs who have seizures more than once monthly or who have severe seizures should be put on anti seizure medication to prevent brain damage. Since you are not sure if this was a seizure I would write it on your calendar so if you see this again you know how long between episodes to share with your veterinarian. I do like to check blood work and do an exam before putting dogs on medication. Hopefully Lola just had a bad dream and this won't recur. Other signs of seizures would be strange behavior before the seizure, the seizure itself can include shaking or tending of all the muscles, Bailey may urinate or defecate during as well. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and trying to film this if it happens again to show your vet. They can determine the cause of the seizure with blood work and more advanced imaging such as a CT scan. If seizure activity is confirmed, Bailey will likely be placed on anti-seizure medication. There are any number of medical reasons that might explain this, but the most likely would be a seizure (not all are classic grand mal), or a heart issue. The best way to determine the cause is to let your veterinarian do a full exam & blood work to rule out any metabolic or otherwise obvious reasons for the episode. Hello. This sounds very suspicious of a seizure. The average age of onset of seizure activity for epileptic dogs is from 2-4 years of age. Since this is a first time occurrence...or the first that you have witnessed....you may have to wait and see if it happens again. It may help your veterinarian if you can video the episode if it happens again. It is always a good idea to have your veterinarian examine her to make sure there are no other problems and discuss the possibility of seizures. Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors including brain tumors. I highly recommend that you have Casey evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. It is hard to say exactly without seeing a video of the spells that are concerning; however, it seems that seizures are a possibility here. I would highly recommend recording one of these episodes on your phone and showing them to your veterinarian for verification of what exactly these are. If they are seizures, then this is considered an uncontrolled condition if they are happening more than once every 30 days, and Charlie would need to start taking anti-seizure medication to help stabilize his condition and help prevent any permanent brain damage. I am so sorry to hear about Coco. I know how scary this can be for the dog as well as the owner. You have my sympathies. The first disease that comes to mind when you were describing her symptoms was one called idiopathic epilepsy or seizures. Unfortunately, dogs of her breed can start to have seizures at an early age. Another disease of small small breed dogs is a condition called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. This disease can also cause the same symptoms as seizures. I strongly encourage you to make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible even if she is acting completely normal. In fact, that would be the best time to do a physical exam as well as diagnostic testing like bloodwork so that you can have medications on board or at home to give if she exhibits the symptoms again. Not to mention, with something as serious as this could be, you need to have a correct diagnosis performed by your local veterinarian so that they can help you treat any problems you may have in the future.
