How cold is too cold for an Australian Shepherd to be outside?

If a dog is cold, they will shiver and may be more lethargic than usual. German Shepherds have a thick coat, but the lowest temperature I wouldn’t leave a dog outside is below 45F. I hope this helps.

Good question. That temperature is much too cold for a dog to be in for long periods of time. I would recommend keeping them indoors. Dogs can typically tolerate temperatures almost equivalent to us, but just 5 degrees greater or lower in most situations. Even still, there is individual variance. Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 8 degrees is OK as long as Tobi has a comfortable bed with blankets. Dogs are comfortable at a similar temperature range as we are, maybe a bit cooler. Puppies have to be warmer than adult dogs. Make sure he has a warm bed and little house to climb into. If you keep him inside with where you are, then he should be warm enough. Best of luck with Tobi!

If you are talking about 40 degrees F°, that is definitively too cold for them as puppies cannot regulate their normal temperature for the first few weeks of life. Unfortunately (for the house) they should stay inside. Young puppies are susceptible to cold, and therefore should not be left outside in any cold weather for longer than 10 minutes. I would not leave them out in any weather below 40-45F for longer than 10 minutes.

If he is happy in the garage and it is safe for him to be there without being supervised (beware of antifreeze and other toxic chemicals, electrical cables etc) then i recommend creating an insulated indoor kennel in there. Styrofoam sheets, old duvets and bubble wrap can all help to insulate bedding areas
