How long can a Siberian Husky safely stay out in freezing temps?

Labradors are pretty big, hardy dogs. As long as they have boots to protect their feet from freezing they can probably tolerate at least a 30 Minute walk. However, I would not leave him out unsupervised in those temperatures. Best of luck in those cold temperatures! Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. You will want to walk her in the early morning or late in the evening when it is hot outside. Be careful on concrete or asphalt as it can burn her pads. As opposed to a specific amount of time, I go off of how the dog is feeling each day. If she begins slowing down or if she becomes sluggish, you have gone too far. A dog will pant when it is warm, but this should not be excessive. If she is actively seeking out shade (under a tree for example) and laying down, again you have gone too far. Be sure to carry water and offer it to her frequently. I hope this information helps!

A 10 minute was twice a day is really encouraged. However, once their body acclimates to that you could easily work them up to an hour walk it more a day. If you want to run them I would start at a 5 or 10 min run several times a week and work yourself up by 5 minute increments weekly. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside. Young puppies are susceptible to cold, and therefore should not be left outside in any cold weather for longer than 10 minutes. I would not leave them out in any weather below 40-45F for longer than 10 minutes.

This is a big change for Rocco! He need time to adapt. I would suggest to let him inside till you go to bed so he doesn't see you awake within the house and doesn't get stressed because cannot interact with you or your family members. Sometimes they do not like to sleep in the brand new house, they just don't understand what changed compared to before. Add some toys and treats to make the new recovery even more comfy. That is a long time to leave a dog home alone, and huskies are VERY active dogs. If he needs to be left home alone that long during the day, I would make sure to walk him on a long walk before you leave, and again first thing when you come home to get out excess energy (assuming he is an adult and up to date on all vaccinations). If you are leaving him home, I would get him used to the house by limiting his access first- either through crate training or baby gates to avoid him getting into items or chewing on things he shouldn't. If he seems anxious, providing him with a puzzle toy stuffed with food or treats, playing a soothing TV or radio show, and other distractions can help. If the Husky is a puppy, then this is way too long to leave a young dog alone as they likely cannot hold their bladder that long. Having someone that can come check on him and take him out potty every few hours during the day, or coming home yourself to do so is best until he is older and can hold his potty long enough.
