My dog has cold symptoms. Is liquorice tea or garlic safe for her?

This happens in healthy pets as well. If she does have an upper respiratory issue, baby liver or iron will not help her. If you are concerned about an infection you can take her temperature rectally. Anything over 102.5 is a fever in a dog. If that is the case, I would take her to a vet for a full physical exam and possible blood work and x-rays to determine what is going on and her best treatment options. If her temperature is normal (less than 102.5) I would continue to monitor Honey for green or yellow nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, lethargy, or anorexia. Hello, I'm sorry Shelly isn't feeling well. When we talk about a "cold" in people, typically that implies a viral upper respiratory infection. There is no specific treatment for a viral respiratory infection other than nursing care. However, Shelly's symptoms of clearing her throat with the discharge from her eyes could be something other than a viral respiratory infection - dogs don't get "colds" very often like people do, and I worry about the possibility of something more serious such as pneumonia, a tooth root abscess, or a heart condition, all of which could also cause either upper or lower respiratory congestion. If this has been going on more than a day or two, I recommend having Shelly seen by a vet. Your vet will do an exam, and will likely recommend chest x-rays if they have any concerns with the sound of her lungs or heart. They will then be able to offer specific therapies based on what is causing these symptoms. I hope this helps!

Yes. Honey is fine to give. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help with some of the inflammation and irritation along her respiratory tract (nose and throat). However she should still receive medical treatment through your vet and get on a short course of antibiotics. Most URI's in pets are caused by multimodal bacteria and therefore need antibiotics to clear.

You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. See link below. You can also put her in a small bathroom with a hot steamy shower going to allow the steam to help break up the mucus. If it isn't improving, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Unfortunately, a lot of dog end up needing antibiotics to help get rid of these upper respiratory infections. Poor Baby. She likely has an upper respiratory infection. A lower airway infection (pneumonia) is possible also but typically pets are much sicker and have fluid sounds from the chest if this were the case. Upper respiratory infections in dogs are not like people colds, because they generally are caused by a bacterial infection which requires a short course of antibiotics to get rid of. Therefore, it's best if you get Baby seen by your local vet to be examined and prescribed medication. I would make it a point to get her seen within the next 24 hrs if at all possible, before her condition gets any worse. Don't be tempted to give her any over be counter cough medicine, because she has, what sounds like, a productive cough (coughing up fluid and phlegm) and therefore you don't want to suppress her cough. The vet will give her the exact medication she needs to get well again. I wish Baby a full and speedy recovery!

Unfortunately there are no antibiotics you can purchase over the counter for Lettie. I would avoid trying to give her any OTC cold medication as well as it may have some negative effects. The best thing you can do for her is take her to your vet where she can be evaluated and given the proper medication she needs.

This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment.
