Is clear vaginal discharge normal for my dog every 4-6 weeks?

Hi, has she been passing urine outside ? If so would you be able to take a urine sample ? I would then consider to have an abdominal ultrasound done on Yuzu, it can be done without an anaesthetic and it will give you more information about a possible pyrometra or any other abnormalities in the abdomen. If an ultrasound does not provide all the information required, then X-rays would be my next suggestion. Hope this helps,

I do recommend to have Kuma re-examined as well. Some discharge is normal and this does vary from dog to dog. From the photo, this looks excessive but again, it's hard to say if this is normal or abnormal at this time. Have the vet look at a sample under the microscope to check for excessive bacteria which could indicate a vaginitis. Supplementing with probiotics (I recommend Purina's Forti-Flora) and feeding a diet that also promotes healthy bacterial populations (I recommend Royal Canin) may also help to keep high amounts of beneficial bacteria. This could be due to a form of recurrent vaginitis, usually juvenile form of vaginitis can cause that without having serious consequences. Should you notice any systemic signs (inappetence, lethargy for example) or more intense discharge, I would suggest a check up otherwise no further action has to be taken as these forms of inflammation can be self limiting. This is not normal and could be a variety of causes. We can have a vaginal hyperplasia (especially in unspayed females), tumors in the vagina, hermaphrodite dogs with an enlarged clitoris, and prolapses of vagina and uterus. I would make an appointment to see your vet and if she is licking at the area put an e-collar on her until she is seen to prevent self-trauma. Treatment will depend on the cause. Best of luck!

However, if she had a heat about 3-4 weeks ago, this discharge could be more concerning for an infection (pyometra) or a false pregnancy. Other signs associated with a pyometra could include a decreased appetite, lethargy, painful abdomen, and persistent discharge from her vulva. If you note any of these, then Pepper should be evaluated by her veterinarian immediately. Finally, discharge from the vulva could indicate a urinary tract infection, vaginitis, perhaps her heat cycle. If you note continue to note this discharge, then have Pepper evaluated. Some discharge is normal but it is generally clearish or slightly opaque. Vaginal discharge can indicate an infection in the uterus. I recommend to have her examined today in case this discharge is related to a uterine infection. Uterine infections can lead to a life threatening septicemia so it's best to play it safe. It sounds like Margo may have an infection in the uterus or lower genital tract. This is most common following a recent heat cycle. I would advise that she be examined by her veterinarian to confirm this. If she does have a uterine infection, your vet can advise you about the best treatment which may include oral antibiotics or having her spayed depending on the severity.
