Why does my female dog have clear, stringy vaginal discharge?

Hello sorry to hear about Molly. I would be concerned with fluid in her uterus. This fluid could be infectious or non-infectious. That is this could be a pyometra or infection of her uterus. The best way to diagnose an infected uterus would be to sample some of the fluid in her uterus as well as obtain bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound. Ideally, you should have this evaluated by your veterinarian immediately as a pyometra can be quite detrimental to health. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Some discharge is normal but it is generally clearish or slightly opaque. Vaginal discharge can indicate an infection in the uterus. I recommend to have her examined today in case this discharge is related to a uterine infection. Uterine infections can lead to a life threatening septicemia so it's best to play it safe. It's a little difficult to see for certain in the picture, but I do see a fluid filled structure in the photo near the urinary bladder that certainly could be the uterus. In your final picture the discharge on the ground does not look what I would typically expect from vaginitis. You may want to get a third opinion from a veterinarian if you're concerned about going forward with surgery. If it is a uterine infection it is unlikely to clear with antibiotics alone and even if it does the infection returns with the next heat cycle, so I typically recommend surgery whenever I am concerned about a pyometra.

Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. Discharge from this area can either be coming from the urinary tract (uti, etc ) or reproductive tract. Likely your vet will rule out uti first with a urinalysis and urine culture. A sterile vaginal exam may also be recommended. If persistent and not related to a uti then it may become important to make sure she was properly spayed. This could be due to a form of recurrent vaginitis, usually juvenile form of vaginitis can cause that without having serious consequences. Should you notice any systemic signs (inappetence, lethargy for example) or more intense discharge, I would suggest a check up otherwise no further action has to be taken as these forms of inflammation can be self limiting.
