Is my dog's vaginal discharge and eye goop normal after antibiotics?

Hello! Kira may have a vaginal, uterine, or bladder infection going on. I would recommend taking a urine sample in to your veterinarian and scheduling an examination. He/she may want to do blood work and other diagnostics as well. Good luck!

Hello. How is Luna feeling overall? If she is playful & active, eating & drinking well, then she may just have a little vaginitis. Keep the area wiped clean with an antiseptic skin wipe & these are usually self-limiting. As for the eye discharge, it is possible that her corneas may have gotten a little dry during her surgery. You can flush the eyes with some artificial tears from your pharmacy, but if any redness develops in the sclera ( white part of the eye ) or any of the tissues around the eye redden or swell ( conjunctivitis ), please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics. I am sorry to hear about Izzy. Some dogs can suffer from repeated vulvar/vaginal infection if they have what we call a “recessed vulva” where they have extra skin around the vulva creating an environment with excess moisture. I would ask your vet if they think Izzy has this. There is a surgery to correct this problem and many dogs do amazingly well after the surgery. If your vet does not think this is the issue the next step might be a bacterial culture because it is possible a resistant bacteria is present.

Yes, the discharge can be normal 10 days after surgery. As long as she is acting normally just monitor the discharge for now. If it persists for another week then you should take her back to the vet for a follow-up. Passing small amounts of stool can also be normal. This can be due from the anesthesia and/or medications she is taking which slow down the GI tract and disrupt the normal bacterial population in the intestines. This is not normal and could be a variety of causes. We can have a vaginal hyperplasia (especially in unspayed females), tumors in the vagina, hermaphrodite dogs with an enlarged clitoris, and prolapses of vagina and uterus. I would make an appointment to see your vet and if she is licking at the area put an e-collar on her until she is seen to prevent self-trauma. Treatment will depend on the cause. Best of luck!

I would let your vet know if this is a new or sudden symptom. In some cases, some vaginal discharge can be normal (and may be concentrated if Brandy is wearing a diaper), however since she has a history of UTIs it is best to rule anything out such as continuing bladder or vaginal issues if this symptom is new. Signs of something more serious (such as a new infection) may cause the discharge to turn yellow, cloudy, or green.

It would be best to have your vet recheck this. Pyo can be a concern at any age. Even if the dog hasn't had a heat before. They can also have very severe UTIs which can be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. It would be best to do a culture of the discharge to make sure the medication you are giving is working and that you know exactly what type of infection you are dealing with.
