My dog has a snotty nose. Is it serious, or will it clear up?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 110 lbs

My dog has a snotty nose. Last week it was in one side, now it's in both. Vet visits are an ordeal with him as he has to be tranquilized and muzzled to be seen and with it being his nose a muzzle is going to be difficult. Any ideas before I schedule the visit? Possible it will run it's course like a human with a cold? Thank you in advance.

I recommend purchasing a basket muzzle either from amazon or from your local pet store and scheduling an appointment with your vet. That much thick nasal discharge definitely indicates either a bacterial or viral respiratory infection that can possibly lead to pneumonia (expensive/difficult to treat and possibly life threatening) if not treated early. Your vet may write a script for Xanax and dispense trazadone to be given prior to the appointment. Good luck! Keno is a good looking shepherd!
