My dog is straining from a UTI. How long does Clavamox take to work?

Clavaseptin (called Clavamox on the U.S. market) usually starts to work pretty quickly. I would expect you to see improvement in 12 - 24 hours after starting it. If you're not seeing improvement two things could be going on: 1.) your cat doesn't have a UTI, and there's something else causing his problems or 2.) the bacteria causing your cat's UTI isn't susceptible to Clavaseptin, and that antibiotic isn't effectively treating the infection. You didn't mention your cat's age but I'll throw in that UTI's are actually extremely uncommon in cats under 8 years of age. Mostly they have a syndrome called feline lower urinary tract disease, often abbreviated FLUTD or FUS. In male cats it can be extremely serious as the inflammation can cause blockage of the urethra and the inability to urinate. If you're seeing anything like this in your cat I'd urge you to seek veterinary care immediately.

If Milky is having difficulty urinating, I would recommend having her rechecked by the veterinarian to make sure she is not blocked. If she is still having symptoms of a urinary tract infection, I would give it the full course (typically 14-21 days) before rechecking with the veterinarian. But if she is straining to urinate and there is no urine coming out, I would get her to the vet immediately to be examined. I hope this helps and hope Milky gets better soon! Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Antibiotics for a UTI can take a few days to clear up the infection. I would recommend monitoring him for another few days. If it doesn't clear up by that point then I would suggest having him re-checked and a sample of his urine being sent away for a culture and sensitivity in case the antibiotic is not the right one for the infection that Brownie has. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Love Saki’s name! You are correct in your calculation, but 250 mg is not too much for Saki. Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

This looks like a pretty normal urine puddle for a dog Romeo's size. I think it's encouraging that he's no longer only urinating in small volumes. Signs that his infection would be persisting or worsening include urinating small frequent amounts, straining to urinate, seeing blood in the urine, licking his penis more than normal, or drinking large volumes of water. From what you've described, it sounds as though Romeo is improving so far, but his test on Friday will provide more clarity. Until then, just keep giving the amoxicillin as prescribed. Blood in the urine can be from a urinary tract infection for which Clavamox is usually an appropriate antibiotic. Blood in the urine however can also be due to crystals that are forming and irritating the bladder/urethral lining. If you haven’t already submitted a urine sample for a urinalysis (to determine specific gravity /whether the kidneys are concentrating the urine properly, whether there is glucose in the urine which is usually a symptom of diabetes, whether there is bacteria/white blood cells in the urine and whether there are crystals and what kind, I would recommend submitting a urine sample to your vet’s office for a urinalysis and then starting the antibiotics prescribed. If Summer has stones, she likely has crystals as well and may benefit from being on a prescription crystal dissolving diet such as Royal Canin Urinary S/O or Hills C/D for life depending on the type of crystals seen. I am sorry to hear about your kitty! Usually it will take a few days for the antibiotics to show marked improvement. That being said, urine in the blood if there was a large amount may take a few days more to improve. If her other symptoms (urinary urgency or accidents) are improved I would be less concerned. If at the end of the week she is still having blood I would let your vet know as they may want to check for things like a bladder stone or mass which could be causing bleeding.
