How to know if my dog's UTI is improving on amoxicillin treatment?

I'm sorry to hear that Romeo has a UTI! Amoxicillin is a very common broad-spectrum antibiotic that is commonly used in animals and people. In some individuals, it can cause an upset stomach with vomiting, diarrhea, and/or loss of appetite. For sensitive individuals, this could start after a day or two, but for others, they may have a bit of mildly soft stool near the end of their treatment course. Odds are good that Romeo will be absolutely fine with this medication! It's not a big deal if he has mildly soft stool for a few days. If this happens, just feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually mixing his normal food back in. However, if he refuses to eat or drink, or begins to vomit, stop the amoxicillin and call your vet to discuss switching to a different medication. There may be some residual inflammation related to the stones. He may also have urinary crystals which may also be irritating. Dis uss anti-inflammatory or pain medi ation with your veterinary. Having either on board may make Watson more comfortable. A sterile urine sample should be collected and submitted for urinalysis, culture and sensitivity. If he has a UTI, the culture will confirm it. The sensitivity panel will determine the most effective antibiotic to use in treatment. It may be that any potential bacteria are not susceptible to amoxicillin.

Amoxicillin usually does not cause dogs to become lethargic or have decreased urine output. It can sometimes cause a decrease in appetite. The symptoms you described seem typical of a UTI. Other differentials would be kidney disease or dehydration from not drinking. If Suzy is not improving on the Amoxicillin, I recommend that you take her back to the vet and have them do a full urinalysis with culture and possibly bloodwork to make sure her kidneys are functioning properly. They should also check her hydration status and administer fluids if needed. Sometimes I have to put dogs on a different antibiotic like Bactrim to get rid or their UTI. Or the UTI is due to a yeast and they need an antifungal agent to treat it. Your veterinarian can switch her meds if needed. The urine culture will tell you what drugs the infection is sensitive to. If her signs do not improve then you should have her urine tested again by your veterinarian to determine if the antibiotic she is currently on is adequate for her infection. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. Good on you for taking Zero into the vet when you noticed the symptoms he was having! It will take a couple of days for him to return to normal after having a UTI, and that would be why you notice him still in some discomfort. It's good that his urine appears to be back to normal, which does suggest the medication is working. He should continue to improve as you give the medication, and be very sure to give it as prescribed. If you notice that the blood returns to his urine and/or he continues to appear painful over the next three to four days, then I would take him back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!
