How long until my puppy's UTI antibiotics work and discharge clears?

It would be best to have your vet recheck this. Pyo can be a concern at any age. Even if the dog hasn't had a heat before. They can also have very severe UTIs which can be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. It would be best to do a culture of the discharge to make sure the medication you are giving is working and that you know exactly what type of infection you are dealing with. Hi, ten days of antibiotics should have cleared the infection by now. Do you still notice signs ? Could she be urinary incontinent ? There is a chance that if the antibiotics were not based on colture and sensitivity they are not the right ones.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ashlee. If she is having worsening discharge, I would actually be concerned that her antibiotics are not working. If her signs do not improve then you should have her urine tested again by your veterinarian to determine if the antibiotic she is currently on is adequate for her infection. If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. In general, a dog should be off antibiotics for 10-14 days prior to a urine culture, but sometimes we will culture a dog that has not been off antibiotics that long if we suspect that there is still an infection. I would certainly discuss that with the specialist and get their recommendation. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

Poor Scout. I agree, give him a couple of days to see if the antibiotics help. If they don't, his urine is very blood, he appears ill, lethargic, or distressed, take him back into a vet immediately.
