My dog's Clavamox dosage for her UTI seems high. Is it safe?

Hi, The dose of amoxicilin/clavulanic acid is 12.5mg/kg -25mg/kg so, your dog was prescribed the right dose. It would be very unlikely that Guiness was subdued because of this antibiotic, as lethargy is an uncommon side effect of this medication. However, in rare cases this type of adverse reactions are possible and if you notice that your dog is lethargic after the next dose of antibiotic you should get in touch with your veterinarian to possibly change the type of medication he is on.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! 300mg clavamox twice daily is an appropriate dose for a 37 lb dog as his 250mg metronidazole twice daily. If she truly is 105 pounds like it says on her profile, then this should be fine as that would be actually a low dose. The use of antibiotics without a proper veterinary evaluation is not recommended as it can result in antibiotic resistance, especially if the patient is underdosed chronically. If Bella has not been evaluated by a veterinarian, I would recommend she is before continuing any antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

Hi there. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is a very safe antibiotic and is not very hard on the kidneys and liver. It can cause gastric upset if given on an empty stomach, so I would recommend just giving with some food. If you see changes in urination or drinking habits you can have him checked out for his kidneys, but this medication should be fine for Danny. I would only just check out how much Danny weighs. The normal dose for Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is 12.5mg/kg, so I would be giving 375mg every 12 hours to Danny assuming he weighs 30kg. Antibiotics have very large ranges in terms of dosing, and different countries will have slightly different formulations, so I would check this with your vet, as the dose may be higher with the specific compounding that your vet uses.

Hello. The normal dose is 12.5mg/kg, however you can give a higher dose as well, sometimes up to 20mg/kg (however this is usually reserved for very severe infections and given IV). A dose for a 34kg dog would be 425mg - so approximately 500mg, twice daily for 10 days. At this dose his kidney/liver should not be affected.

The typical dose of enrofloxacin for dogs is 2.5 to 10 mg per pound (5 to 20 mg/kg) orally per day. The total daily dose may be given once a day or divided into twice daily doses. So, the dose she was prescribed is on the high end of the dosing range for her weight but still within the recommended dosage. If you are concerned I suggest you call your vet for clarification. 31 pounds / 2.2 pounds per kg = 14kg 14kg x 20 mg/kg (high end of the dosing range) = 281.8 mg 281.8mg / 135mg tablets = 2 tablets
