Why is my dog peeing blood? Could it be a UTI or bladder stones?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 12 years and 9 months old | 90 lbs

Summers vet said she had some stones, today she kept urinating and had some blood. Called my vet and she said it could also be uti. She prescribed CO-AMOXICLAV to be given 2x day for 10 days. What do I do? What’s ur opinion on this? Thanks And aside this summers is on vetmedin 5mg 2x day and lasix 3 of 40mg also 2x day. Thanks

Blood in the urine can be from a urinary tract infection for which Clavamox is usually an appropriate antibiotic. Blood in the urine however can also be due to crystals that are forming and irritating the bladder/urethral lining. If you haven’t already submitted a urine sample for a urinalysis (to determine specific gravity /whether the kidneys are concentrating the urine properly, whether there is glucose in the urine which is usually a symptom of diabetes, whether there is bacteria/white blood cells in the urine and whether there are crystals and what kind, I would recommend submitting a urine sample to your vet’s office for a urinalysis and then starting the antibiotics prescribed. If Summer has stones, she likely has crystals as well and may benefit from being on a prescription crystal dissolving diet such as Royal Canin Urinary S/O or Hills C/D for life depending on the type of crystals seen. It could be that Lacey has a UTI or bladder stones causing the blood in her urine. It could also be due to something more serious such as leptospirosis or toxin exposure. This is something that needs to be checked out by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose the cause of the blood in her urine, and can treat her for it. Poor Bailey! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. If she is having dark red blood and clots in her urine while she is still on antibiotics and her special urinary diet, something is definitely wrong. She may have an antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or even a bladder tumor. I would recommend taking her to your vet tomorrow to have this checked. It sounds like she needs some diagnostic testing to help determine what's wrong - your vet will likely recommend a urinalysis, urine culture, and x-rays +/- ultrasound of her bladder to help diagnose the problem so that she can get started on appropriate treatment.

Kelsey needs to be seen by a veterinarian today. This is an emergency now. She may have had a urinary tract infection originally, but now could have a serious chronic kidney infection or bladder infection, cancer of the bladder or polyps or other problems with the lining of the bladder. Please take her to your vet today for an exam, urinalysis and further diagnostics if needed. She will need prescription antibiotics for at least 21 days and depending on the diagnosis may need other treatments as well.

Did they do anytime sample tonxhexk for cells and crystals and see what bacteria what present? My dog has blood in urine. Is an X-ray for kidney stones necessary?

Your vet is correct there was microscopic blood in her urine which is abnormal in a free catch sample. There are many reasons for blood in the urine including but not limited to bladder stones (also subclinical infection, a mass, etc.). It will always be up to you though what you think is best for your pet. Your vet is just performing good medicine and making recommendations based on results to make sure your pet is healthy and disease free. It sounds like you have a very thorough and proactive vet for Marci which is great! Unfortunately there is no way to know why the blood is there without more tests but if you would like to monitor her and her urine i am sure your vet will be happy to recommend a recheck schedule. Why is my senior dog's urine still pink/bloody after antibiotics?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. My dog has a bladder infection. Are blood clots in urine normal?

It's normal for there to be some blood in the urine with a UTI, however passing clots is not very common. If the vet didn't take x-rays or do an ultrasound of he bladder, I'd recommend going back for another appointment to check and make sure he doesn't have a stone - that's not something we always do in the first go around, but blood clots would make me concerned.

My dog has urinary stones and is bleeding from his penis. Is it serious?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Cointhee has stones. Urinary stones are concerning because at any point one of the stones can cause a complete blockage of the urethra (tube you pee out of), and can block any flow of urine and this can lead to life-threatening kidney disease and death because the potassium cannot be peed out. Therefore, firstly, it is very important to make sure that Cointhee is able to pee out urine at all times, and isn't trying to pee with nothing coming out. If this is occurring please get him to a vet right away. Blood in the urine can be caused by the stones/crystals causing irritation, and can also be caused by infection that sometimes goes along with the stones. Repeated trauma to the urethra can cause strictures, and long term complications. I would discuss with your vet about taking some x-rays to see how many stones are present, and discuss if surgery is an option to remove the stones. I would also discuss about checking to see if an infection is present. Usual treatment for bladder stones includes antiboitics if infection is present, special food to try to dissolve the small crystals and tiny stones, and surgery to remove the big stones. This may be due to inflammation or infection in the urinary tract. Stones or crystals can also cause bloody urine. Ideally, Mia should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays may be indicated along with a urinalysis and urine culture. If necessary, your vet may dispense an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.
