Is my dog's Clavamox & Metronidazole dose safe for vulva discharge?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 37 lbs

We've been talking to our vet about concerning discharge from Hazel'z vulva. Vet is concerned about serious infections so wanted us to come is for emergency spay. Surgeon heard a slight cough and prescribed antibiotics and rescheduled us. I'm concerned about the dosage because it seems like a lot. They gave us around 300mg of clavamox and 250mg of metronidazole all to take twice a day. I would trust them but they've been very vague with us for a while.

300mg clavamox twice daily is an appropriate dose for a 37 lb dog as his 250mg metronidazole twice daily. Together these antibiotics work well for both
aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Dog on antibiotics has milky vulvar discharge. What should I do?

Hello, & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Stomorgyl is a common antibiotic also known as metronidazole. It is unlikely that starting the antibiotic is the cause of Chloe's vulvar discharge. It may be just a coincidence & if this is an infection as well, the Sttomorgyl may help. So, do not stop the antibiotic, but do contact your veterinarian at your earliest convenience in case he wants to culture or do anything in addition for the discharge. My dog's Clavamox dosage for her UTI seems high. Is it safe?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Love Saki’s name! You are correct in your calculation, but 250 mg is not too much for Saki. Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can give the probiotic while you are giving the clindamycin. The dose of clindamycin for dental abscesses is: 5.5-33mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours. He is receiving 25mg/kg, I hope this helps!

Is my dog's Baytril dose for pyometra effective? What about Clavamox?

Hello, sorry other about Lee. That is indeed a low dose for a Baytril prescription. I would double check with your veterinarian about the dose as perhaps it was intended to be given twice daily. Clavamox could also be administered to treat an infection either on its own or in combination with the Baytril. PGF2 Alpha is not an antibiotic and may help rid the fluid within the uterus but will not treat an infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog is lethargic after Clavamox. Is 375mg right for a 40lb dog?

Hi, The dose of amoxicilin/clavulanic acid is 12.5mg/kg -25mg/kg so, your dog was prescribed the right dose. It would be very unlikely that Guiness was subdued because of this antibiotic, as lethargy is an uncommon side effect of this medication. However, in rare cases this type of adverse reactions are possible and if you notice that your dog is lethargic after the next dose of antibiotic you should get in touch with your veterinarian to possibly change the type of medication he is on.
