Is 125mg Clavamox the correct dose for my 14lb dog's anal infection?

Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

I usually send home Simplicef for anal gland fistula but Clavamox at an appropriate dose for Lily’s weight would definitely help, especially if you are not able to bring her to the vet right away. It is important to fully express both the ruptured anal gland and the other anal gland to prevent a second fistula on the other side. Ideally the ruptured anal gland should be flushed with a dilute chlorhexidine solution but a sitz is definitely better than not cleaning out the ruptured gland at all. I usually send home an e-collar to prevent licking, antibiotics, a probiotic to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory for pain such as Rimadyl, and a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment to speed up the healing process. Hi, The dose of amoxicilin/clavulanic acid is 12.5mg/kg -25mg/kg so, your dog was prescribed the right dose. It would be very unlikely that Guiness was subdued because of this antibiotic, as lethargy is an uncommon side effect of this medication. However, in rare cases this type of adverse reactions are possible and if you notice that your dog is lethargic after the next dose of antibiotic you should get in touch with your veterinarian to possibly change the type of medication he is on.

That means for a dog this size, he needs 420 to 1,050mg at each dose. Even using the lowest end of the dosing range you would have to give him 7 tablets twice a day.
