Dog on antibiotics has milky vulvar discharge. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! 300mg clavamox twice daily is an appropriate dose for a 37 lb dog as his 250mg metronidazole twice daily. Together these antibiotics work well for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. I hope this helps and I wish Hazel a speedy recovery!

I am sorry to hear about Izzy. Some dogs can suffer from repeated vulvar/vaginal infection if they have what we call a “recessed vulva” where they have extra skin around the vulva creating an environment with excess moisture. I would ask your vet if they think Izzy has this. There is a surgery to correct this problem and many dogs do amazingly well after the surgery. If your vet does not think this is the issue the next step might be a bacterial culture because it is possible a resistant bacteria is present.

I do recommend to have Kuma re-examined as well. Some discharge is normal and this does vary from dog to dog. From the photo, this looks excessive but again, it's hard to say if this is normal or abnormal at this time. Have the vet look at a sample under the microscope to check for excessive bacteria which could indicate a vaginitis. Supplementing with probiotics (I recommend Purina's Forti-Flora) and feeding a diet that also promotes healthy bacterial populations (I recommend Royal Canin) may also help to keep high amounts of beneficial bacteria. It sounds like she may have an infection in her uterus and needs emergency surgery. It does sound like she may have a flea allergy but I think the vomiting and discharge are unrelated. It would be best to have your vet recheck this. Pyo can be a concern at any age. Even if the dog hasn't had a heat before. They can also have very severe UTIs which can be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. It would be best to do a culture of the discharge to make sure the medication you are giving is working and that you know exactly what type of infection you are dealing with. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old is your dog? As dogs age there are chronic changes to the uterine lining, it becomes thickened and sometimes even cystic. Metritis just means inflammation of the uterine lining and there are many causes most of which have nothing to do with pregnancy. If she had purulent discharge from her vulva that indicates an infection. A pyometra means infection (puss) in the uterus. If she responded to antibiotics I would assume she has a pyometra. My best advice is to have her spayed. It is the best thing for your dog. If she had discharge then the pyometra is open. If there was no discharge it is considered closed. I wish you the best!

I am assuming she is on an antibiotic. if not, then your vet should start her on an antibiotic. If she is on an antibiotic then you should call your vet as he/she may want to change antibiotics. After 4 days, I would expect any discharge to be decreasing.
