Is amoxicillin safe for my dog's liver and kidneys long-term?

Hello. The normal dose is 12.5mg/kg, however you can give a higher dose as well, sometimes up to 20mg/kg (however this is usually reserved for very severe infections and given IV). A dose for a 34kg dog would be 425mg - so approximately 500mg, twice daily for 10 days. At this dose his kidney/liver should not be affected.

This drug is cleared primarily through the kidneys so sometimes decreasing the dose is recommended for dogs in severe kidney failure, but it is not contraindicated for dogs with liver or kidney disease. This is an antibiotic so while it might help treat a secondary infection and therefore decrease itching it is not a medication specifically for itching.

Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

The Amoxicillin Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic and the Destolit will help support her liver function. To help support liver function, I also recommend using Denamarin liver supplement which can be found online quite easily. This medication has a wide range of use in the literature, and vets will choose the appropriate dose for the patient and the infection they are treating. Dogs do not necessarily metabolize medications the same way people do - so often require different strength or frequency in their dosing compared to the human dose. Terbinafine is generally well tolerated by dogs, so I would not recommend adding any additional tonics or medications unless your vet guides you on this. The best way you can help support Danny's kidneys is to simply provide clean safe drinking water available at all times. If you are concerned, you might ask your vet to run some baseline bloodwork on Danny to ensure his organs are functioning properly, and you could repeat this bloodwork after his course of medication. Hi, The dose of amoxicilin/clavulanic acid is 12.5mg/kg -25mg/kg so, your dog was prescribed the right dose. It would be very unlikely that Guiness was subdued because of this antibiotic, as lethargy is an uncommon side effect of this medication. However, in rare cases this type of adverse reactions are possible and if you notice that your dog is lethargic after the next dose of antibiotic you should get in touch with your veterinarian to possibly change the type of medication he is on.
