My dog has a UTI. Is her enrofloxacin dose correct for her weight?

If she truly is 105 pounds like it says on her profile, then this should be fine as that would be actually a low dose. The use of antibiotics without a proper veterinary evaluation is not recommended as it can result in antibiotic resistance, especially if the patient is underdosed chronically. If Bella has not been evaluated by a veterinarian, I would recommend she is before continuing any antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello. The range of doses for treating Pseudomonas is quite large, but we do recommend treating at the higher end. In some cases, this would mean your dog may need up to 400 mg per day ( 20 mg/kg/day ). At the very least, I would probably recommend the 75 mg every 12 hours or 150 mg once a day. Enrofloxacin is a safe antibiotic to give Flip and it will not be detrimental to his growth. While it is a fluoroquinolone, it is not recommended to give to puppies under six months of age due to the effects on the growth of a puppy. Because he is over six months of age, it is fine to give to him :-)

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Love Saki’s name! You are correct in your calculation, but 250 mg is not too much for Saki. Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

The usual dose used is 15mg/kg but you could go as high as 30mg/kg; so a 26# dog would need between 177mg to 354mg twice a day. I do think the dose is high so please call your vet and ask. Personally I would use 1/2 of a 480mg tablet twice a day. The person who filled the prescription may have made an error. The drug is very safe so I would not be worried about it's safety. Remember, any drug can cause side effects but I use this drug A LOT and very rarely see any side effects and if I do, they are usually mild. I'm sorry to hear that your little girl is not feeling well. For a UTI, that is an appropriate dose of Baytril. Unfortunately, Baytril, along with most other antibiotics, can cause vomiting. You can either try to give the pill with food or cut it in half and give half of the tablet every 12 hours. This way she still gets the full pill every day, but decreasing the amount given at one time may decrease the upset stomach she is experiencing. If she continues to vomit, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian as she may need to get a different antibiotic if she can't tolerate the Baytril.

It is important to have a UTI diagnosed by your veterinarian. A sterile urine sample can be collected and submitted for culture and sensitivity. This may identify the organism responsible as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment. The SMZ-TMP tabs you have may not be effective against the bacteria. Additionally, inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate any underlying condition which could delay diagnosis.
