Chihuahua had a seizure from chocolate. Will she have more seizures?

Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors including brain tumors. I highly recommend that you have Casey evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. Hello, thank you for your question about Gigi. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and the toxicity can lead to a severity of symptoms. Depending on when Gigi ate the chocolate and how many ounces of chocolate she ate relative to her weight can determine the likelihood of developing any toxicity. The first signs of toxicity include vomiting/diarrhea, if a large amount was ingested symptoms can progressive to anxiety, tremoring, or seizures. For a small dog like Gigi, even a small amount like 4-5 chunks, could lead to severe side effects. I contacting ASPCA Poison Control who can provide more guided information regarding the dose that Gigi ingested and make recommendations for treatment/veterinary care. There is a fee for their service. Alternatively, you could have Gigi seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine her and determine the need for additional treatments. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dot. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine if she is truly having seizures and if so, the cause of them. Given her age and breed, I am concerned she is experiencing low blood sugar triggering the seizures. If this happens again before she can be seen, apply some Karo syrup to her gums. If this is the case, it should help. You also should have food available to her at all times. This can prevent episodes from happening if it is due to low blood sugar. I hope this information helps!

First of all the first seizure was very very long, 8 minutes is a long time for a seizure and that could have caused some longer lasting damage (although not permanent) to the brain, and maybe that is why Mango has several more small seizures. it is worrying that the seizures are happening so frequently, ideally he should see a vet ASAP as it could be life threatening if another long seizure occurs.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. She is cute! Vomiting can cause a vasovagal response and the animal could have a syncopal episode (fainting) but I don't believe it would cause a seizure. Are you sure your dog is having a seizure and not just fainting? I know of dogs that vomiting because of the seizure but since you actually induced vomiting that doesn't make sense. It will probably not cause any problems as it wasn't enough chocolate to be toxic. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or tremors and if noted, take him to a vet right away. Good luck and kisses to Hercules!
